I am a staff photojournalist at the Houston Chronicle, where I specialize in breaking news. I also cover general assignments and sports. I studied photojournalism at San Francisco State University, graduating with a B.A. in photojournalism in 2014. I worked as a staff photojournalist at the Corvallis Gazette-Times (Ore.) and the Albany Democrat-Herald (Ore.), before moving to Houston. I also freelanced for USA Today Sports Images.
I was born in El Salvador and moved with my family to San Francisco when I was 11 years old. I speak Spanish and English fluently. I became a photojournalist to be an accurate recorder of history and because images can have the biggest impact within journalism. In Houston, I've become an expert at covering disasters such as hurricanes and petrochemical fires. I shot the Astros as they competed in the World Series and embedded in a hospital during the COVID-19 pandemic.
In 2020 I was named the Star Photojournalist of the Year by the Texas Associated Press Managing Editors. The same organization awarded me first places in the News Photography and Photojournalism categories. The Associated Press Sports Editors also awarded me with first place in the Action Photo category.
